Program Description

The Fire Science program leads to an Associate in Science Degree and prepares students for careers in the Fire Services and for the fire service or fire protection related professional to enhance technical competencies, and prepare them for career advancement. While providing a scientific understanding of fire hazards and their control, this degree will place emphasis on effective operating procedures at fires and other emergencies. As a requirement, you must pass the Physical Agility Test. Graduates of the program typically find employment as firefighters, investigators, fire protection and detection specialists, fire engineers, and safety inspectors.

Academy Track Program

This two year degree program provides the student with the opportunity to obtain an Associate in Science Degree in Fire Science Technology, and complete the Basic Fire Recruit Academy and Emergency Medical Technology Programs. Upon completion, students will be eligible for certification as a firefighter and emergency medical technician in the State of Florida.

The Academy Track, A.S. Degree in Fire Science is a degree program designed to provide the student with the skills, abilities, and education for a successful fire science career. The track program will expose the student to a strong educational foundation in collegiate level general education and major field fire science courses. The student will learn to function as a member of a team through instruction and team building exercises.

The final semester of the two-year degree program will be the Basic Fire Recruit Academy. Participation in this final phase of training will be solely dependent on the student successfully completing all the required course work prior to entrance into the Basic Fire Recruit Academy. Upon successful completion of the Academy, the student will be required to pass the State of Florida Fire Certification Examination.

Basic Recruit Academy

The Basic Fire Recruit Academy is offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer and meets the minimum educational requirements to be a certified combat firefighter in the State of Florida. Upon successful completion, the student is eligible to take the state written and practical examination administered by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. Prior to admission, students must have completed the EMT or Paramedic training program and passed the State/national certification exam. This program meets the minimum educational requirements for an individual to be a certified combat firefighter in the State of Florida. Upon successful completion of this training program, the student is eligible to take the state written and practical examination administered by the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. Prior to admission, students must complete the Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic training program. Graduates of the program typically find employment as firefighters.
